Pesquisas recentes sugerem que a exposição à luz azul antes de dormir pode distorcer seu ritmo (circadiano) natural e causar a incapacidade de adormecer.
A causa é o fotorreceptor em seus olhos, chamado Melanopsina. Este receptor é sensível a uma estreita faixa de luz azul na gama 460-480nm que pode suprimir a produção de melatonina - um hormônio responsável por seus ciclos de sono-vigília saudáveis.
Em estudos científicos experimentais, notou-se que uma média de pessoas que leiem no tablet ou smartphone por algumas horas antes de dormir podem ter seu sono encurtado em cerca de uma hora. Além de que isso afeta a sua memória e concentração a médio prazo.
